In Vitro anthelmintic profiles of 2-(benzylideneamino)-3-(1H-indol-3-yl) propanoic acid and its Cd(II) and Zn(II) complexes
Abstract
Schiff base ligand 2-(benzylideneamino)-3-(1H-indol-3-yl)propanoic acid was synthesized by condensation reaction of benzaldehyde and tryptophan. The complexes of this ligand from Cd (II) and Zn (II) were successfully synthesized and characterized physicochemically and spectroscopically. The ligand and the complexes showed a good yield ranging from 88-94 %. The FT IR spectroscopic data showed appearance of the azomethine (C=N), carbonyl (C=O) and -OH peaks at 1692 cm-1 , 1580 cm-1 and 3399 cm-1 respectively in the spectrum of Schiff base. The molar conductivity data of the Schiff base was found to be 3.5 Ω -1 cm2mol-1 indicating non electrolytic nature whereas that of Zn and Cd complexes ranged between 72 -141 Ω -1 cm2mol-1 indicating that Zn complex is non-electrolyte while Cd complex is a weak electrolyte in water. On the basis of magnetic and electronic spectral data, octahedral geometry was proposed for all the complexes. The UV-Vis spectra showed metal-ligand bond formation. The Cd complex showed similar biological activity compared to the ligand while Zn complex showed biological activity lower than the ligand. The complexes and the ligand showed a lower biocidal activity compared to the standard drug.
