Abstract

A Schiff base derived from condensation reaction of 2-mercaptoaniline and 2-furaldehyde was synthesized. It was refluxed with Mn (II), Fe (II), and Co (II) chlorides which results in the formation of the corresponding metal (II) complexes in good yield. The Schiff base and the complexes were characterized on the basis of melting point and decomposition temperature, FTIR, magnetic susceptibility, conductivity measurement and elemental analysis. The melting point of the Schiff base was found to be 210 oC and the decomposition temperature of the complexes was in the range of 210 258 oC. Molar conductance values were found to be within the range of 9.27 – 15.11 Ω–1cm2mol–1. Magnetic moment values of the synthesized complexes obtained were in the range of 4.27–5.11 BM. The IR spectral data revealed azomethine peak of the Schiff base at 1591 cm–1 while for the complexes, the peak was found within 1599-1611 cm-1. New peaks due to υ(M–N) in the range of 555-567 cm 1υ(M–O) in range of 748-752 cm–1 and υ(M–S) in range of 452-470 cm-1 were recorded in the spectra of the metal (II) complexes. The elemental analysis result gave good agreement with expected 1:2 metal to ligand ratio. The antimicrobial effect of the Schiff base and the metal (II) complexes were studied against some bacterial (Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, Proteus mirabilis Pseudomonas ariginosa,) and fungal (Aspergillus fumigatus, and Aspergillus flavus) isolates. The results showed that, the metal (II) complexes exhibited higher antibacterial and antifungal activity with zone of inhibition ranging from (6 – 20mm) and (6 – 16mm) respectively than the Schiff base.
