Performance evaluation of sawdust briquettes with varying particle sizes as alternative domestic fuel
Abstract
This study evaluated the performance of sawdust briquettes produced with different particle sizes as an alternative renewable energy source for domestic cooking. Six briquette samples were produced using sawdust particles of 1 mm, 5 mm, and 10 mm sizes, both individually and in combinations, with starch as a binding agent. The briquettes were evaluated through water boiling tests (WBT) to determine their burning efficiency, moisture content, and ash content. Sample B (5 mm particle size) demonstrated superior performance with the highest briquette yield (22 units), efficient burning rate (2.57 g/min), low ash content (11.45%), and intermediate moisture content (70.50%). The 5 mm and 10 mm particle size briquettes exhibited higher burning rates and lower ash content compared to 1mm particles, making them more suitable for domestic cooking applications. This research demonstrates that sawdust briquettes can serve as viable, affordable, and environmentally sustainable alternatives to conventional cooking fuels, potentially reducing deforestation and waste disposal challenges in developing regions.
