The Need for Human Factors Integration in the Design of Stations to Improve Passenger Safety

Sethunya Tau-Matsie

Abstract

This paper outlines the findings from a handful of analyses conducted to assess the level of Human Factors Integration at stations in South Africa. These assessments were conducted during several platform-train interface investigations that were performed by the Railway Safety Regulator inspectors. The analysis covered 25 stations at 3 regions in South Africa. The level of Human Factors Integration was assessed through focussing on specific station design factors that hindered or limited the commuters’ ability to move safely and freely at stations. Factors such as the presence of safety signage, evacuation arrangements, security measures, inclusive design and easy station access were assessed. A general poor Human Factors Integration in the design and layout of railway stations was found. The noted failures in Human Factors Integration may mean that the safety of passengers at stations is compromised.
