Abstract

Information Retrieval (IR) schemes involve the need for users to formulate their information need via a query. Many times, due to  ambiguity in human languages and representation, these queries have been largely imprecise thereby leading to the retrieval of many irrelevant information. Several mathematical approaches have been used in the concept of IR scheme. The Dubois and Prade’s version of the Gradual Element Approach is considered as an alternative to earlier mathematical IR models. The aim is to present the understanding of the suitability of the use of gradual element approach in an Information Retrieval schemes. The researchers sourced for data from Text
Retrieval Conference (TREC). TREC is one of the standard information retrieval (IR) collections and TREC collections are the benchmark dataset used by most information retrieval (IR) and Web search algorithms. It has several tracks, each of which consists of dataset to test for a specific task.
