Abstract

English Title: Use of Aframomum species (Aframomum aulacocorpus, A. citratum, A. daniellii) for weight control, lipid profile and antioxidant status in Wistar rats fed an atherogenic diet

English Abstract

The generation of free radicals resulting from lipid oxidation is one of the problems associated with food loss and diseases mostly linked to overweight and obesity. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as the  hydroxy and the hydroxyperoxide radicals are generally produced by normal metabolic processes or by factors of external agents. This is the origin of the objective of this research in using three species of genus Aframomum (Aframomum aulacocorpus, A. citratum, A. daniellii) for weight control, lipid profile and antioxidant properties in wistar rats feed with atherogenic diet. The oral administration of hydroethanolic extracts of Aframomun aulacocorpus, A. citratum and A. daniellii reduced the exponential weight gain brought about by atherogenous diet. This was followed by a significant reduction (p<0.05) of total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol, with a significant increase (p<0.05) of HDL cholesterol. The extract also had a significant reduction (p<0.05) in the concentration of hydroperoxide and malondialdehyde (MDA) by increasing the antioxidant status of the experimental animals.
