Rethinking artificial intelligence in Nigerian education: Aligning with global best practices

Abstract

This paper explores the strategic integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into Nigerian education, both teaching and learning to align with global best practices. It examines key challenges such as the digital divide, systemic AI bias, and financial constraints that could worsen educational inequalities. Drawing upon the Social Learning Theory and a Human-Centred AI Integration approach, the research proposes actionable policy recommendations. These include phased curriculum reforms, the establishment of a cross-sectoral AI in Education council, mandatory professional development for teachers, and a targeted national project for infrastructural development. The paper concludes that by addressing these multifaceted challenges through a balanced, ethical, and collaborative framework, Nigeria can harness the transformative potential of AI to create a more equitable and effective education system.
