Economic recession and the cost of public secondary school education in Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo State,

Abstract

This study investigated the influence of economic recession on the administrative costs and provision of infrastructure in public secondary schools in Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo State. Using a descriptive survey design, data were collected from 63 respondents, including secondary school administrators and teachers through a structured questionnaire. The instruments were found to be reliable, with a coefficient above 0.80, indicating strong internal consistency. The study found out that economic recession significantly influenced the administrative costs, increase in school fees, Parents Teachers Association levies and other challenges in fees payment. It also revealed that infrastructural provisions, including classrooms and learning materials, were adversely affected by budget constraints during the recession. The study revealed that economic recession had a significant influence on both the administrative costs and infrastructure provisions; it also indicated the substantial impact of economic downturns on these aspects of education. The findings highlighted the strain of economic recession on resources, including staff salaries and facility maintenance, contributing to financial burdens on students and families. Based on these results, the study recommended increased government funding for education, private sector collaboration and the implementation of policies ensuring equitable access to education, especially for students from low-income families.
