Antibacterial effect of different parts of Garcinia kola

Abstract



The different parts of Garcinia Kola, such as the seed (fruit) seedpeel, leaves, roots, rootbark, stem and stembark were collected for the determination of their antibacterial effects against Escherichiacoli, Proteus species, Pseudomonas aerginosa,Staphylococcus aureus and Vibrio cholera using disc diffusion method. The soxhlet extracts of the different parts of Garcinia Kola were found to have significant inhibitory effects on some of the test organisms particularly Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus although moderate and limited inhibitory activities were observed. The cold-water extracts of the different ground parts were found to have poor inhibitory activities, while the hot water extracts exhibited no inhibitory effect.
