Abstract

Agricultural technologies are only useful when farmers are aware of and adopt them. Interaction among stakeholders in the Agricultural Development Programmes (ADPs) would enhance the discovery and adoption of best practices. Comparative analysis of farmers' awareness and adoption of root crops technologies in Abia, Anambra and Imo states was carried out. The sample of the study comprised 216 farmers selected through a stratified random sampling procedure from the 12 ADP zones in the areas of study. Structured interview schedule and documentary sources were used to collect relevant data. Data analyses were done through the use of descriptive statistics and Analysis of Variance at 0.05 significant level. Abia State (60.30%) topped the list in terms of percentage of farmers who were aware and adopted selected technologies out of the 16 categories developed and promoted by the National Root Crops Research Institute. Anambra (58.7%) and Imo States (48.7%) were second and third, respectively, when awareness and adoption of technologies were considered. Farmers in Anambra and Imo States were not aware of Gocken technology. There were significant differences (0.00) among Abia, Anambra and Imo States farmers' ratings of adoption of root and tuber crop technologies. Adoption level was highest in Abia, (mean = 3.09) followed by Anambra (mean = 2.08) and the least, being Imo State (mean = 1.84). It was recommended that extension activities be stepped up to consciously increase awareness and adoption of root crop technologies in Anambra and Imo States, where awareness and adoption were lower than in Abia State. Gocken technology should be transferred to farmers in Anambra and Imo States.
