Teachers' readiness for elementary sexuality education in Osun State primary schools

Popoola Janet Temilola

Abstract

The study investigated primary school teachers' knowledge of sexuality education (SE) and perceived readiness to teach the subject. The study employed the descriptive survey design. The sample consisted of 180 teachers selected using the multi-stage sampling procedure from the population of teachers in 30 primary schools in Osun State. Two research questions were generated to determine teachers' knowledge of elementary SE and their readiness to teach the subject. A questionnaire with a test-retest reliability coefficient of 0.83 was used for data collection. Data analysis was done using percentages. The results showed that majority of teachers (79.8%) expressed their readiness to teach SE. The results also showed that 42.2% and 49.1% of the teachers had adequate and fairly-adequate knowledge of the subject respectively. The study concluded that with teachers' readiness to teach SE and their fair knowledge of the subject, the prospects for its effective implementation in Osun State primary schools are bright.
