Staff mentoring as a correlate of secondary school students' academic performance in Ido/Osi, Ekiti State

Abstract

The inability of secondary school system to meet the expectations of its purposes necessitated the need to look at staff mentoring as correlate of secondary school students' academic performance in Ido/Osi, Ekiti State. The correlation study selected 10 out of16 secondary schools in Ido/Osi using simple random sampling technique. All school principals and five Heads of Departments were purposively selected as participants while 15 teachers each from the selected schools were also used. Staff Mentoring and Students' Academic Performance Questionnaire (SMSAPQ) and Students' Academic Performance Pro-forma (SAPP) were used to elicit information. Using test re-test method, reliability coefficients of 0.74 and 0.75 were arrived at. Hypotheses were tested using Pearson product moment correlation statistics. The study found that there was a significant relationship between staff mentoring and students' academic performance. It recommended that school administrators should create favourable ambience for staff mentoring to enhance students' academic performance.
