Analysis of the work environment of extension personnel in Benue and Plateau States, Nigeria

Isaac E Ilevbaoje

Abstract

This investigation was undertaken to ascertain the environment in which extension workers transact their legitimate professional duties in Benue and Plateau States. The analyses of the results obtained indicate that extension workers operate in a less satisfying environment to the extent that about 67.3%, 36.9%, 88.2%, 69.6% and 88.2% of the respondents expressed dissatisfaction with their accommodation, transportation, access to specialized trainings, salaries and promotion, respectively. Additionally, only a paltry proportion (11.8%) of staff admitted that all parts of their work jurisdiction are accessible with 60.0% specifying that they are unable to effectively cover the areas assigned to them. To minimize staff discomfort and promote effective extension delivery in Benue and Plateau States, the paper recommends the creation of a healthy work environment that is capable of motivating the staff to work productively and accountably.
