Sex Stereotype In The Vocational Choice Of Boys And Girls In Katsina State

Abstract



Career choice is the choice of ones work in life. There are a lot of career in the world of work that can be chosen by an individual whether boy or girl. Sex stereotype is the differences in the idea or belief about male and female persons which has been formalized and remained unchanged. Sex stereotype in career choice therefore implies the existence of male adequate and female adequate careers in vocational choice. The purpose of the study therefore is to find out if boys and girls choose careers based on their sex role and make recommendations on how to eradicate sex stereotype in career choice. Sex stereotype in career choice leads to cases of drop out and discrimination of females in job opportunities. Data\'s were collected on choice of career by junior secondary school class three. Chi-square and percentage were used to analysis the data\'s. The result of the study revealed that boys and girls choose career based on their sex-roles. Based on the findings recommendations were made to train and post guidance councilors to all secondary schools to ensure that career choice is based on interest, aptitude and ability.
