A plea for filial dialogue in Ama Ata Aidoo’s <i>Anowa</i> and Efua T. Sutherland’s <i>The marriage of Anansewa</i>

Abstract

This article examines the plea for dialogue in parent/child relationship in Ama Ata Aidoo’s Anowa and Efua T. Sutherland’s The Marriage of Anansewa through the exploration of generation gap conflicts. It essentially examines the knock-on effects of parental pressure on a young girl’s marriage as voiced by Ama Ata Aidoo and Efua T. Sutherland who use respectively tragedy and comedy to call for mediation. The study reasserts that in a patriarchal society where socio-political structures are firmly held under the control of men, it is very difficult for female children in the absence of dialogue, to achieve their full potential of welfare and freedom if they challenge male parental authority. Dialogue then is the way par excellence to arrive at consensus and enable the young female to have her say in the choices affecting her future.

RESUME

Cet article examine le plaidoyer pour un dialogue dans la relation parent/enfant dans les pièces théâtrales Anowa de Ama Ata Aidoo et The Marriage of Anansewa d’Efua T. Sutherland à travers l’exploration des conflits de générations. Il examine essentiellement les effets de la pression parentale dans le mariage de la jeune fille décrites par Ama Ata Aidoo et Efua T. Sutherland qui utilisent respectivement la tragédie et la comédie. L’étude réaffirme que dans une société patriarcale où les structures sociopolitiques sont fermement maintenues sous le contrôle des hommes, il est difficile pour la jeune fille de parvenir à réaliser son plein potentiel de bien-être et de liberté si elle fait fi à l’autorité parentale masculine. Le dialogue demeure donc la voie par excellence pour parvenir à un consensus et permettre à la jeune fille d’exprimer son point de vue dans les choix touchant à son avenir.
