Effects of Toposequential Positions and Depths on Soil Physical Properties of Juju Hill Slope Under Forest Catchment in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State
Abstract
A study was carried out in 2021 and 2022 to determine toposequential positions and depth effects on soil properties on the juju hill slope under forest catchment in Abakaliki, an ecological area of Nigeria. It was a factorial experimental design in a completely randomized design. The toposequential positions were separated by 60m apart, geo-referenced as summit, upper, middle, lower, and bottom slopes and depths of 0-20cm, 20-40cm, and 40- 60cm at each position, respectively. Core and auger samples were collected at each position and depth for determinations of physical properties of the soil. Data generated after Laboratory analysis were analyzed using analysis of variance and means separated using Fisher’s Least Significant Difference at (p<0.05). Results showed that soil fractions, though varied was predominantly higher in sand across positions and depths for 2021 and 2022 seasons compared to other physical properties, which have staggered significance for two seasons. Soil bulk density showed significant consistent reduction (p<0.05) variations across Toposequential positions and depths in 2021, except at the summit. It is concluded that differences observed in soil physical properties across toposequential positions and depths are due to the effects of depth and slope positions. It is recommended that management interventions be location-specific.
