Comparative Analysis of Waste Management Constraints in Micro, Small, and Medium Agro-Processing Industries in South-East, Nigeria
Abstract
This study presents a comparative analysis of the constraints affecting the implementation of effective waste management practices among micro, small, and medium-scale agroprocessing industries in South-East Nigeria. Data were collected through a semi-structured questionnaire using a multi-stage random sampling technique that selected 190 micro, 159 small, and 47 medium-scale industries. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) identified the key constraints for each scale. For micro-scale industries, major barriers were a lack of interest in waste management and inadequate government programs. Small-scale industries faced challenges related to high -technology costs and insufficient income. Medium-scale industries were constrained by a lack of investment interest and limited access to advanced technologies. The study concludes that limited operational capacity and weak institutional support are significant, yet scale-specific, impediments. It recommends enhanced, targeted government support, including technical training, financial assistance, and improved infrastructure to promote sustainable waste management and support economic growth in South-East, Nigeria.
