Assessment of Cropping Patterns on Maize Production in Ogun State of Nigeria

Abstract

This study is an assessment to determine how the cropping systems, such as crop rotation, intercropping, mixed cropping, and monoculture, affect the production of maize in Ogun State, Nigeria. Multistage sampling was applied to select 160 maize farmers, which was analyzed in descriptive statistics, percent, means, and multinomial logistic regression. The findings show that the preference in cropping is highly dependent on the availability of water and the climatic factors, and mixed cropping (92.0%) and monoculture (32.7%) are the dominant. Exactly 92.7% of farmers indeed use mixed cropping, whilst only 10% use intercropping. The yield of maize in the different types of cropping: monoculture (<200 kg), mixed cropping (>500 kg), intercropping (<100 kg), and crop rotation (<100 kg). The multinomial regression indicates that farming experience, the size of the farms, climatic conditions, and the quality of the soils have a positive effect on the diversification practices, but higher yields have a tendency to favour monoculture. The results indicate that environmental issues play a vital role in ensuring sustainable production of maize, and the underutilized method of cropping, such as crop rotation and intercropping, needs to be encouraged. Increasing the use of these systems would increase their productivity and sustainability in Ogun State, Nigeria.
