Determinants of Adoption of Cassava Production Technologies Among SmallScale Farmers in Ayamalum Local Government Area, Anambra State
Abstract
This study examined the determinants of the adoption of cassava production technologies among farmers in Ayamelum Local Government Area of Anambra State. Primary data were collected from 90 cassava farmers randomly sampled through a well-structured questionnaire. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential (multiple regression) statistics. The results revealed that cassava farming in Ayamelum LGA was dominated by females (64%) mean age of 40.2 years, most of whom possess tertiary education (40.4%). Plant spacing (97.8%), yield assessment (84.5%), and improved stem cuttings (76.5%) were some of the production technologies adopted by farmers. The regression analysis (R² = 0.724, F = 20.49, p < 0.01) showed that education (β = 0.083, p < 0.01), access to credit (β = 0.048, p < 0.05), and marital status (β = 0.038, p < 0.05) positively and significantly influenced adoption, while household size (β = –0.019, p < 0.01) negatively affected it. The main barriers identified were high machinery costs (x ̄ = 3.82), limited credit access (x ̄ = 3.84), unavailability of improved technologies (x ̄ = 3.55), and weak government support (x ̄ = 3.54). The study concluded that institutional and financial factors remain the major constraints to cassava-technology adoption. Strengthening rural credit systems, subsidizing inputs, and intensifying extension services will enhance adoption, productivity, and farmers’ livelihoods in Ayamelum LGA.
