Climate Change Perception and Level of Investment in Cassava Production in Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State, Nigeria
Abstract
The study assessed the climate change perception and level of investment in cassava production in Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State, Nigeria. Specifically, the study examined the socioeconomic characteristics of cassava farmers; assessed the perception of the farmers about climate change; determined the level of investment of the farmers; estimated the determinants of the investment of the farmers; and identified the climate change adaptation strategies used by the farmers. A multistage sampling procedure was used to select 80 respondents for the study. Primary data were used for this study and were obtained through the use of a structured questionnaire. Data collected were analyzed using both descriptive (frequency count, percentages, and means) and Ordinary Least Square Regression. The result revealed that the respondents strongly perceive that climate change is real, caused by human activities, and has negatively impacted their farming through increased temperature, unpredictable rainfall, reduced yields, pests, and higher input costs. Most of the farmers invested between ₦200,000 and ₦499,999, with an average investment of ₦558,750, indicating small to medium-scale farming. Age (p<0.01), level of education (p<0.01), farming experience (p<0.01), household size (p<0.10), and cooperative membership (p<0.01) determined the level of investment of the farmers. Cassava farmers in the study area used several climate change adaptation strategies, with the most common being the use of drought/flood-resistant crop varieties, adjustment of planting dates, mixed cropping, organic manure use, irrigation, crop rotation, training, indigenous knowledge, and cooperative membership for information sharing. Given that most cassava farmers are educated and experienced, extension services should provide regular training on advanced climate-smart practices to enhance their adaptation capacity.
