Identifying the gas effect zones in hydrocarbon reservoir using well-log data from the Niger Delta basin
Abstract
Porosity analysis of three Niger Delta wells (001, Sheet 1 and A22) using density and neutron logs indicates good-to-excellent reservoir quality with appreciable gas saturation, supporting their suitability for gas development and production. Three well data (001, Sheet 1 and A22) were obtained for this research in order to identify the presence of gas in hydrocarbon reservoirs in the Niger Delta Basin. Gas is one of the main fluids that boost the economy of Nigeria if discovered in appreciable amounts. The software used for the analysis, processes and computation of the result was Microsoft Excel. The results obtained indicate that the average density porosity is about 17.74% from well 001; 30.71% from well A22 and 20.37% from well sheet 1. Also, from neutron porosity, the average obtained from well 001 is 17.95%; those from wells A22 and well sheet1 are 35.96% and 17.45%, respectively. Therefore, these results define porosity as belonging to the good class for wells 001 and well sheet 1, and the excellent class for well A22. Both density porosity and neutron porosity agree in terms of the class of porosity. However, all these porosity values indicate that the three wells studied are highly porous; it is possible to transmit and store fluid and therefore, strongly recommended for the development and production of gas. The three wells
studied have shown the presence of gas saturation in appreciable quantities.
