Abstract

Moringa oleifera and Leucaena leucocaephala are browse plants that are locally available throughout the year in the tropics and their leaves which are high in protein can be used to supplement feed for cattle. Hence, the study was set up to ascertain the effects of Moringa and Leucaena supplementation on milk yield and composition of milk of lactating cows. Four Sanga cows with an average weight of 340.27 kg were used in a 4x4 Latin Square design experiment over a fourperiod feeding trial where each period lasted for 10 days. Forages were sampled with a quadrant at each period of the experiment for dry matter composition analysis whilst the experimental diets were supplemented and studied. Milk yield, supplementary feed intake, nutrient composition of milk, biochemical and haematological indices of the blood and serum of the cows are parameters that were measured. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) related to Latin square design was used to separate the treatment means at a significance level of 5% using Minitab version 18 (2017). The results of the study showed that milk yield recorded for the lactating Sanga cows between the treatments ranged from 2218.5g/day/cow to 2423.38g/day/cow and were close to significance (p= 0.06). The levels of glucose in the blood of lactating cows were between 4.10 and 4.438 mmol/L whilst red blood cell count ranged from 5.742 to 6.388 106 /µL. It was observed that supplementing lactating cows with feed made of wheat bran, moringa and leucaena leaf meals did not result in high cholesterol levels in the cows’ serum.
