Abstract

English title: Seasonal variation in diet of carp (Cyprinus carpio) in Ghrib dam lake (Ain Defla), Algeria.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Information on the trophic activity of carp is rare in Algeria. In our study, we present the results of a one-year monitoring in a lake ecosystem to (i) characterize its seasonal trophic activity and (ii) determine the physico-chemical parameters of the dam waters affecting this activity.

Methodology and results : The study was carried out on a sample of 369 Cyprinus carpio sampling between May 2013 and April 2014 in the ecosystem of the Ghrib dam lake, samples were chosen around the perimeter of the dam in order to determine the physicochemical parameters of the water. Therefore, the emptiness coefficient and the occurrence coefficient, explain the trophic activity of C.carpio. The results were analyzed by the methods of the canonical correspondence analysis (CCA), the water of the dam considered not very polluted. The food bowls of C.carpio is varied and diversified, favoring chironomids, followed by plants, crustaceans, then insects and oligochaetes.

Conclusions and application of results: Carp is an omnivorous fish. Evolution trophic activity of the two sexes does not represent a significant difference. In this dam C.carpio is characterized by an intense trophic activity in autumn, which corresponds with the new cycle of biological activities and very weak in summer which corresponds with the period of biological rest of the common carp. The coefficient of emptiness, increases between spring and summer, it waits for the maximum in the month of June, then it gradually decreases between autumn and winter this period requires significant in takes of nutrients necessary for development and used for reproduction the new activity biological. The occurrence coefficient shows the varied of food bowl by C.carpio. Analysis canonical correspondences (ACC) allows the characterization of the influence of physico-chemical parameters of the dam water, and especially the role of nutrients on the variety of the seasonal food bowl of C. carpio.
