Abstract

This study focuses on the relevance of modern technology in documenting and archiving Anioma folk songs. The paper tries to establish the need for archiving such songs as the traditional ways of preserving them have been through oral transmission from generation to generation. This paper discusses the Anioma people of Delta State in relation to their folksongs, lists the modern technological devices that can serve the purpose of documenting and archiving these folksongs and highlights the benefits of preserving these songs. Some of the folksongs were recorded in those devices and translations of the song texts were also done in English language. The instruments used for data collection in this study are observation, interview, library method and the use of internet. Based on the findings, the researchers observed that there has never been an intentional effort to document some of these songs with the modern technology device by the original owners and that some of the songs are being forgotten as the days go by, hence the need for this study. The paper concludes that technology helps not only in music production but in its documentation and archiving and this is one of the major achievements in the area of modern music technology. Recommendations are made on how people can easily document and archive their indigenous songs with these modern technological devices to preserve them for the generation unborn as these songs are part of cultural heritage.
