Igbo Art Music Composers and Globalization

AI Nwamara

Abstract

Art music can be defined as those musical compositions which trained musicians produce under the influence of their western music training. On the other hand, Globalisation has been defined as the integration of the activities of various people irrespective of distance and national boundaries. It has also been observed that through new information, communication, transportation and technological applications, globalisation creates a pool of ideas and opportunities that facilitate understanding, co-operation and interdependence amongst sovereign states. This paper therefore takes a look at a cross section of popular Igbo art music composers, attempting to classify them according to their generations and approaches to composition. It further highlights the problems and prospects of these composers in this era of globalisation.
