Abstract

The assessment of farmers’ production level in targeted crops before and after Agriculture Development Project activities, which represent the effect of the programme, is one of the effective methods of evaluating Agricultural programmes. The study determines the comparative effect of the Commercial Agriculture Development Project on the yield of farmers in Cross River State, Nigeria. Data for this study were collected using a structured questionnaire and analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results revealed that 74.2% of the beneficiaries were males, with a mean age of 48 years, 44.4% attended secondary school, while 38.1% completed tertiary education. The mean household size was 7 persons with an average farm size of 7.52 hectares. The beneficiaries had a mean farming experience of 20.76 years. Result revealed that the mean yield of cocoa increased from 276.47kg to 580.38kg, the mean yield of palm oil increased from 17,570.78kg to 32,495.08kg, and the mean yield of rice increased from 920.95kg to 2,125.36kg before and after the project, respectively. The result of the analysis of difference shows that there is a significant difference between the mean yield of farmers before (18,768.06) and after (35,200.76) the project at the 0.05 level of significance, p-value (0.000) <0.05, mean difference = -16432.70278, z-value = -50.966 > 1.96. The study concluded that the project significantly improved farmers’ crops yield. The study recommended that there should be consistent entrepreneurial skills training, capacity building, and infrastructure development (export markets, feeder roads, electricity, irrigation, and modern processing/storage facilities) for a sustainable increase in the farm yield of beneficiaries.
