Joseph Raphael Wawa

Abstract

This paper examines the right to freedom of expression in Tanzania within the context of social media’s growing influence. While digital platforms have expanded the avenue of civic engagements and business platforms and social communication, they have also presented new challenges, including State regulation (censorship, banning or restriction), misinformation, disinformation, malinformation and online abuse among others. Basing on international legal standards on the right to freedom of expression, domestic legal framework and real case scenarios the paper argues for a balanced approach that guarantees the right to freedom of expression while addressing the havoc wrecked by digital communication. It argues to refocus legal and policy framework to adequately protect this fundamental right while addressing the contemporary challenges posed by online platforms. By analyzing the existing legal framework and prevailing threats. The paper recommendations a more robust and relevant approach to safeguard freedom of expression in the digital age in Tanzania. It is also recommended that there should be legal reforms, digital literacy and promotion of multi-sectoral dialogue.
