Optimizing E-Ticketing Paradigms for Bus Transit in Tanzania: Integral Determinants of Excellence
Abstract
The adoption of electronic ticketing (e-ticketing) systems in public transportation has transformed fare collection globally, offering benefits such as improved efficiency, reduced fraud, and enhanced passenger experiences. However, in Tanzania, the widespread adoption of e-ticketing in the bus transit sector remains limited due to challenges like inadequate infrastructure, low digital literacy, resistance to change, and high costs. This study explores the integral determinants of optimizing e-ticketing paradigms in Tanzania, focusing on Karatu District as a case study. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews, focus group discussions, and document analysis involving commuters, transport operators, government authorities, and technology provider’s .Findings reveaedl that e-ticketing systems hold significant potential but require addressing key barriers. User-friendly platforms, public awareness campaigns, and training programs are essential to enhance adoption. Investments in reliable internet connectivity and interoperable payment systems are critical for technological infrastructure. Robust regulatory frameworks and stakeholder collaboration are needed to ensure compliance and standardization. Financial sustainability, socio-economic factors, and cultural norms must also be addressed to overcome resistance and ensure inclusivity. Recommendations were proferred baed on the findings.
