The Influence of Selected Elements of Schools Culture on Students’ Academic Performance in Southwestern Nigeria

Abstract

This study was conducted on the elements of school culture which are teachers’ collaboration, self-efficacy and goal achievement orientation and students’ academic performance. The expost facto using descriptive survey design was adopted. Multi-stage sampling technique was used to select the sample for this study. The results revealed that valuing teachers’ collaboration contributed significantly to students’ academic performance (β = 0.468; t = 8.986; p < .05), followed by valuing achievement goal orientation which also contributed significantly to students’ academic performance (β = 0.446; t = 5.078; p < .05), while valuing teachers’ selfefficiency contributed insignificantly to students’ academic performance (β = – 0.033, t = 0.428; p > 0.05). It was recommended among others that secondary school leaders should carry out school culture elements audit test in their schools to know whether teachers understand the concept of school culture and how it relates to their jobs, students and the school, and how they could benefit from training in school culture oriented programmes so as to take advantage of improvement in school culture towards enhancing their students’ academic performance.
