Assessment of Information-Seeking Strategies of Women In Purdah For Economic Empowerment In Kano State
Abstract
Access to information is crucial for promoting economic empowerment among women, enabling them to leverage economic resources and opportunities for financial stability. However, cultural norms like Purdah in Kano State, Nigeria, often impede women's access to vital information, hindering their ability to employ effective information-seeking strategies for economic empowerment. This study investigates the information-seeking strategies of Women in Purdah (WIP) in Kano State to bolster their economic empowerment endeavours. Employing a quantitative research approach with a cross-sectional survey design, data were gathered from a sample of 311 women, drawn from a target population of 1,419 using Israel's formula. Despite encountering obstacles, WIP demonstrates a keen awareness of their business-related information needs and utilises diverse tactics such as questioning, observation, discussion, and interaction to navigate these challenges and acquire pertinent information efficiently. Moreover, the study underscores the critical role of education in enhancing women's capacity for strategic information seeking and economic empowerment. Recommendations include establishing specialised business information centres, expanding educational opportunities, and implementing community-based information hubs equipped with tailored resources and family support initiatives.
